Four months ago I started building software for an industry I knew nothing about. That’s the point.
The problem
Moving a 300-tonne transformer across Australia takes a permit, a police escort, two pilot vehicles, a crane crew waiting at the far end, and eight to fifteen separate companies who each have their own version of the schedule.
The operations manager is the only person holding all of those versions at once. And for most of the job he doesn’t actually know where his pilot vehicles are. He knows where they said they were, forty minutes ago, by text.
When that gap costs money it costs a lot. A missed permit window means a twenty-four-hour standdown, and a standdown on a complex move runs into the tens of thousands.
What I’m building
Weyed - from permit to proof
Convoy management, not fleet management. Fleet software assumes every vehicle is permanently enrolled in your system. Half the pilots on any given job are subcontractors you’ve used twice.
So: a six-character code. The operator joins the job, not the platform. Weyed reads the NHVR permit in about sixty seconds, maps the permitted route on real road geometry, tracks the convoy live by vehicle role, flags escort compliance against NSW, QLD and VIC rules, and turns the whole movement into an insurer-ready record. It works offline and syncs when coverage returns, because most of this happens where coverage doesn’t.
AI-NATIVE
I’m one person. Four months ago I had a research document and no code. There’s now a working app, an admin console, an API and a security domain, built by me with AI doing the work that used to need a team.
That isn’t a productivity story, it’s a different job. My day is research, judgement and taste - understanding the industry well enough to know what to build, deciding what’s true, and rejecting the eighty percent of what the machine offers that’s plausible and wrong. The typing was never the hard part.
It’s the same skill the novel needed. Spend enough time in someone else’s world to know how they talk, then build the thing that only makes sense once you’ve been there.
